Young Carers - Short break referrals
Julie Izzard from Norfolk Family Carers would like to highlight the following opportunity for young carers in your school.
After such a long lockdown period I am sure there are many young carers who would welcome the chance to get away for a very well-deserved break. Our Young Carer Family Breaks provide the opportunity for the whole family to relax and enjoy some quality time together away from the often stressful environment within their home. Each break lasts between 3-4 days giving them time to strengthen their relationships while creating happy, lasting memories.
Applications are by professional referral only. I have attached our leaflet, application form and guidance notes which outlines the eligibility criteria. Please feel free to pass these on to your colleagues who are also supporting young carers.
If you have any questions please contact me on 07745 234480.
Sarah Shirras and Jonathan Rice talk all things secondary with Educate Norfolk Co-Chair Jim Adams, including Year 10s, September bubbles and transport troubles.

Read LessFor the third year in a row we are able to offer a 20% discount for those Norfolk secondaries and FE institutions that wish to use the ALPS school data analysis system at KS5. We know that this is an important tool and recognise that organising your contract for this year would not have been a top priority. Should you wish to sing up but have not yet had the opportunity, you are able to join at any time, please email [email protected] to arrange.
Read LessSecondary Science resources from Kings College London
The Department of Chemistry at Kings College London have just released a set of advanced chemistry experiments that can be carried out with common kitchen equipment aimed at KS4-5 students (School year 10-13, aged 14-18.) All the resources students need to carry out the experiment can be found online on their open access webpage: https://www.kcl.ac.uk/chemistry/outreach/open-access-labs
These experiments are based around the excellent opportunity they usually offer students to come into their labs and experience chemistry in a university setting. We have kept it as close to this as possible adapting it to be carried out at home.
The two experiments involve;
1) Extracting caffeine crystals from tea.
2) Using a separation technique (TLC) to analyse the components of different food coluoring and sweets!
The resources include a full protocol, a worksheet students can use to answer questions and think about the experiment, instructional videos and an answer sheet so they can see how they did!

There are some brief details below for your to pass onto you Head of PE.
CONTEXT:
- How can we overcome the health/wellbeing issues created due to this pandemic? Eg. Increased number of students have been inactive during lockdown, increased stress/anxiety, social connectiveness, etc . . .
- There is a need to change perceptions of PE, School Sport and Physical Activity to create a subject which is fit-for-purpose for our young people, and contributing to whole school priorities
- How can we get our least active students – more active?
OPPORTUNITY:
- A funded project is available to secondary schools in Norfolk via Sport England (supported by the Youth Sport Trust)
- This project will be led by Iceni Academy, and will include a member of PE staff contributing to the project which will have the needs of your students as its focus
