Headrest - free support for school leaders
Sarah Shirras has found this fantastic new support service for serving school leaders.
Headrest has been set up by former school leaders who have held the post of both headteacher and Multi Academy Trust CEO. They exist solely for the purpose of supporting school leaders for FREE.
"The free service means that these experienced headteachers, who coach and mentor serving heads and senior executive leaders, are offering ‘a listening ear’ free of charge for those who are exhausted and needing to chat with someone who understands."
To speak to someone or find out more please go to their website.

Dear School Link
Monday 16th November marks the beginning of Anti-Bullying Week 2020. We would like to make you aware of some of the things Norfolk Safer Schools Partnership are offering to schools during this week. Please note some sessions are directed at staff and some at high school aged pupils. Attached are some presentations that can be used and given to younger pupils as you see fit.
I have enclosed links to 3 videos put together by our Safer Schools Partnership Support Workers, Tory Rush and Hazel Tampin. Feel free to use these during your tutorials. The videos can be used as discussion points with your classes.
Video 1 - Bullying. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nuL16c2gp-0
In this video, Tory talks about bullying. She discusses why and how bullying happens and what the difference is between bullying and banter. She also gives advice on how to deal with it and explains when it is appropriate to report bullying behaviour to the police.
Video 2 - Online Bullying. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OTeQ_pTLCYY
In this video, Hazel talks about online bullying and how young people can avoid being a victim of this by making sure they use apps safely. She also highlights the importance of not being an online bully yourself and where to report and get help if you do feel you are a victim of online bullying.
Video 3 - Assaults – Questions from the Youth Commission – Answered. https://youtu.be/0RHVBxMPtzs
As assaults are on the increase and are often part of bullying behaviour, in this video Tory answers questions from the Youth Commission about this type of offence. The questions answered are…
What is assault?
Who can commit assault?
Who can be a victim?
Are there different levels of assault? (Common assault and battery, ABH, GBH)
How will perpetrators be dealt with?
What can you do if you are at risk?

Many of you will remember the work we did with the Worth Less? Campaign a few years ago on school funding. The pressure resulting from this action helped secure fairer funding for our schools.
Jules White and his team are working once again on behalf of all schools and have asked that we share the following documents with you. Their current campaign is targeting the management of COVID in relation to schools. We will bring you more information on the campaign as it is available.

We are pleased to announce that after a rigorous assessment process, Schools Partnership Tutors (which Brian Conway spoke to us about at the leadership updates) has been approved to provide high quality, locally based tutition for shcools in Norfolk and beyond.
EASTA will be designated as the Schools Partnership Tutors’ Norfolk Hub and will receive funding in order to recruit skilled tutors and match them with local schools.
Schools Partnership Tutors was established in collaboration with experienced educational organisations. These include Unity Schools Partnership (CEO Tim Coulson), teaching school alliances, regional hubs and schools; alongside Unity and Norwich Research schools, and Marc Rowland (Pupil Premium Adviser).
The National Tutoring Programme (NTP), designed by a group of five independent charities, was established in response to clear evidence that Covid-19 is likely to widen the attainment gap between poorer pupils and their peers in English schools. It is funded as part of the Government’s £350m allocation to tutoring, through the £1bn coronavirus catch up package.
Schools can choose between different providers and a variety of models in their area, including face-to-face and online tutoring.

Schools Forum representatives - NEEDED
Period extended for nominations for Academy Representatives on Norfolk Schools Forum
You recently received nomination papers for the election of 2 new mainstream academy representatives on the Norfolk Schools Forum; the closing date given for nomination was Thursday, 22 October.
As well as requiring 2 new academy representatives, the Schools Forum also needs 2 delegated substitutes that we can be called upon in the event that an academy representative member is unable to attend a meeting.
Representatives on Schools Forum are there to represent the views of the whole academy sector, rather than their individual academy trust. Therefore, the representative needs to have, or be able to establish, the networks across Norfolk schools.
There has not been the usual level of response to such a request. It is totally understandable, given the pressures on school leaders over the last few months, that this important opportunity was missed.
For this reason, we have come to the decision to extend the period for nominations and are again asking academy trusts to put forward candidates. Academy Trust will receive a nomination form by email this week. If you have not received a form please email [email protected]
Please note that:
- Academies members are there to represent the proprietor bodies of academies and are, therefore, not necessarily restricted to principals, senior staff or governors.
- However, in order to have a broad representation on the School Forum we particularly, but not exclusively, seek nominations from headteachers/principals/CEOs of academies to be these representatives
- There is no requirement for academies members to be split into primary and secondary sub-groups. However, it is good practice to be representative of the mix of primary and secondary pupils within academies in Norfolk where possible
- For the avoidance of doubt, free schools, university technical colleges and studio schools are classed as academies for this purpose. There is no distinction between sponsored and converter academies
Any Nominations already submitted will be entered onto the ballot paper and does not need to be re-entered.
Can nominations please indicate if they are willing to be considered as the representative, substitute or both.
Academy Trust can nomination one person only.
The new deadline for nominations will be 20 November 2020 and nominations should be returned to [email protected]

Active Norfolk - PE & Sport Premium
Active Norfolk have been working hard behind the scenes, developing some free e-learning modules for schools which considers the role of physical activity in supporting emotional and physical wellbeing. They also emphasise that physical activity and the PE & Sport Premium can be tools to promote health and wellbeing and improve pupil outcomes. We have also developed some resources and a guide that can help support schools to increase physical activity in order to lessen the impact of lockdown.
All this is free and can be accessed by anyone at any time; https://www.activenorfolk.org/activity-at-school.
